Computer forensics, sometimes called digital forensics, has a like purpose. But it specializes in the scientific analysis of computer communications and the data on computer storage devices, such as disks and CD-ROMs. Typical applications of computer forensics are listed below. Investigate and uncover evidence of illegal activities conducted via computer, such as credit-card fraud, intellectual property theft, pedophilia, terrorism and computer system intrusion (hacking). Communications Cover Letter Writing Tips and Examples

Communications Cover Letter Writing Tips and Examples Communications Cover Letter Writing Tips and Examples Given that youre applying for a communications job- a position requiring  excellent communication skills- its especially important to write a compelling cover letter that showcases your abilities. For each job application, your cover letter should be customized and highlight your relevant skills and experiences as they relate to the specific position. What to Include Start with an attention grabber. Point to leadership roles  and advanced skills right at the beginning of the cover letter to catch your readers attention from the get-go. “I am writing in response to the communications manager position you have advertised” doesnt say much. “My experience securing international press coverage for large healthcare clients makes me well suited for the communications manager position that has opened with XYZ Corporation” grabs attention. Use the companys job description to identify and call out your relevant skills. Show that you’ve done your homework. You should be researching the company you’re applying to and showing them that youve done it by referring to their mission statement or other information you’ve discovered about them. “As assistant communications manager at ABC Company, I helped to introduce the theme of Global Responsibility to our branding, inspired in large part by how your executive leadership at XYZ Corporation has championed corporate philanthropic commitment to international relief efforts.”   Use numbers when possible. Offer quantitative examples  to demonstrate your achievements. Employers love to see bottom-line results. Did you increase your  predecessor’s PR placements by 50 percent? Increase web traffic to your previous employers website by 40 percent? Raise $1.5 million in donated funds for a nonprofit organization? Illustrate your accomplishments with numbers- math makes your point. Be specific about your skills and strengths. Illustrate your strengths  with detailed descriptions. Dont describe yourself as a team player or people person- these terms are clichéd and overused. Instead, go for detailed descriptions like, Im a seasoned communicator with experience working on international PR campaigns to convey a cohesive brand across all marketing channels. Follow that up with a concrete example: For instance, when I worked on rebranding the marketing for our largest healthcare client, I coordinated communication throughout the clients international offices to create unified media materials. What to Avoid Repeating your resume.  Your cover letter should enhance your resume, showcasing the high points and painting a richer picture of who you are. Additionally, while a resume is straightforward, a cover letter should have some flair and a personal touch along with a tone thats warm and speaks directly to your reader. Focusing on your own needs instead of the employer’s needs. Cover letters are essentially marketing documents, and in writing one you should think of yourself as engaging in a needs-based sales tactic. What are the needs of the employer, and how can you fulfill those needs?   Using the pronoun “I” too much. Limiting the use of I to four or five instances in the entire cover letter is ideal. Your goal is to capture the employer’s serious interest by advertising what it is you can do for them- not by telling them what you want from them as a job provider or what youre hoping to get from the experience. Examples to Follow Take a look at these cover letter examples for communications-related jobs to get an idea of how to construct a professional letter that will effectively sell your credentials to a hiring manager. Aviation Boatswains Mate - Fuels (ABF)

Aviation Boatswains Mate - Fuels (ABF) Aviation Boatswains Mate - Fuels (ABF) U.S. Navy Aviation Boatswains Mates play a major part in launching and recovering naval aircraft quickly and safely from land or ships. This includes aircraft fueling and fuel systems. Later in their careers, ABs can earn the advanced AB rating that requires supervision of all three individual specialties. Duties of Navy Aviation Boatswains Mates The sailors who are part of the AB fuels role are responsible for operating, maintaining and performing organizational maintenance on aviation fueling and lubricating oil systems. They observe and enforce safety precautions and maintain fuel quality surveillance and control when handling aviation fuel systems. They also supervise the operation and servicing of fuel farms and equipment associated with the fueling and de-fueling of aircraft ashore and afloat. In addition, they train and supervise Navy firefighting crews, and offer assistance when necessary to fire rescue teams and damage control parties. Working Environment Most of the work in this rating is performed outdoors, often on the decks of aircraft carriers, in all climates and conditions, in fast-paced and often potentially hazardous environments. ABs work closely with others in aviation ratings. This is a job that requires the ability to work under pressure and good manual dexterity. Safety measures must be followed closely, so attention to detail is important. A lot of the work is repetitive, so those who can concentrate for long periods will do well in this job. Training and Qualifying as a Boatswains Mate To be eligible for this job, a candidate needs a combined score of 184 on the verbal, arithmetic, mechanical knowledge and auto and shop segments of the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) tests. There is no Department of Defense security clearance required for this job. But, youll need a vision of 20/100 correctable to 20/20, normal color perception and normal range hearing. After basic training, these sailors will spend 36 days in A school, or technical school in Pensacola, Florida for roughly five weeks, where theyll learn basic aviation skills and theory and the specific skills theyll need for handling fuel and other equipment. Following basic and A school, boatswains mates may be assigned to aircraft carriers, any number of amphibious assault ships, or to a Naval Air Station. Its also possible they could be assigned to other types of ships that transport planes or helicopters. Sea/Shore Rotation for This Rating First Sea Tour: 60 monthsFirst Shore Tour: 36 monthsSecond Sea Tour: 60 monthsSecond Shore Tour: 36 monthsThird Sea Tour: 48 monthsThird Shore Tour: 36 monthsFourth Sea Tour: 48 monthsFourth Shore Tour: 36 months Sea tours and shore tours for sailors who have completed four sea tours will be 36 months at sea followed by 36 months ashore until retirement. ABF is a sea-intensive community. Manning conditions at sea may require the need to request sea tour extension or shore tour curtailments to ensure all sea duty billets are filled. As of 2017, the outlook for placement in boatswains jobs was good, and about 11,000 men and women were in one of the three boatswain specialties.

get these 10 things off your resume

get these 10 things off your resume get these 10 things off your resume What you don’t  include on your resume can be as important as what you do include. Here are 10 things to make sure you leave off of your resume. 1. An objective.  Resume objectives never help and often hurt. Not only do they feel outdated at this point, but they’re all about what youwant, rather than what this stage of the hiring process is all about what the employer wants. Your resume should be about showing your experience, skills, and accomplishments. If you want to talk about how this particular position is the perfect next step in your career, use the cover letter for that. 2. Short-term jobs.  Short-term jobs raise red flags for hiring managers, who will wonder if you were fired or couldn’t do the work or had trouble getting along with coworkers. Plus, a few months on a job won’t typically be useful in showing any real accomplishments or advancement anyway. One exception to this rule is if the job was short-term because it was designed that way, like contract work or, say, working on a political campaign. Those won’t raise the sorts of questions above, because you’ll have an explanation that doesn’t reflect poorly on you. 3. A functional format.  Functional resumes (which list skills and abilities without including a chronological job history) are widely hated by employers, since they easily mask limited work experience or significant work gaps and make it difficult to understand a candidate’s career progression. For most hiring managers, they’re an immediate red flag that you might be hiding something. 4. Your photo.  Unless you’re applying for a job as a model or actor, photos of yourself have no place on your resume. Since your appearance has nothing to do with your ability to do the job, including a photo comes across as naïve and unprofessional. 5. A fancy design.  Here’s what most hiring managers think when we see a resume with unusual design or use of color: Does this candidate think that their skills and achievements won’t speak for themselves? Do they not understand what employers are looking for? Do they put an inappropriate emphasis on appearances over substance? (The obvious exception to this rule is if you’re applying for design jobs.) 6. Subjective descriptions.  Your resume is for experience and accomplishments only. Its not the place for subjective traits, like great leadership skills or creative innovator. Smart employers ignore anything subjective that applicant write about themselves because so many peoples self-assessments are wildly inaccurate, so your resume should stick to objective facts. 7. Any mention of high school. If you’re more than a few years past your high school graduation date, employers don’t care which high school you attended or how accomplished you were there. Keep any mention of high school off your resume. 8. Extra pages.  If youre in your twenties, your resume should only be one page; theres not enough experience to justify a second one. If youre older, two pages are fine, but you go over that limit at your own peril. Hiring managers may be spending only 20 or 30 seconds on your application initially, so extra pages are either ignored or they dilute the impact of the others. Your resume should be for highlights, not extensive detail. 9. Your salary.  Resumes don’t typically include salary history, so candidates who include it come across as naïve. And by sharing that information unbidden, you’ll also compromise your negotiating power later. 10. Any mention of references, including a statement that “references are available upon request.”  You don’t need to say that you’ll provide your references if asked, because that goes without saying. You’re not causing any harm by including that now-somewhat-dated statement, but it takes up space that you could use for something else.

Invite more folks to the party, just dont let them all in

Invite more folks to the party, just don't let them all in Invite more folks to the party, just don't let them all in Yesterdays post discussed some of the findings of our UK Solicitor Survey, as well as other diversity-related surveys conducted by The Lawyer and Legal Week. Some of the lawyers who took our survey commented on the limited number of lawyers of color at their firms, but seem to take it in relative stride. A litigator in the Birmingham office of Beachcroft LLP says his firm is welcoming, but as with all firms there is a lack of ethnic minorities beyond a certain level. Others express more concern. Remarks one experienced lawyer, Despite the fact we live and work in London I am always surprised at how few ethnic minorities are represented in the city. Some respondents attribute any shortage of diversity to application numbers, not lack of receptivity. The solution to this dearth in applications, suggests a lawyer at Denton Wilde Sapte (which solicitors ranked among the top 10 firms for minorities), is to extend recruitment to non-traditional academic institutions. An associate at Cliffor d Chance (No. 8 on the same ranking) agrees that broader outreach produces results:Along with the friendliness, I would say this is the other trait that stands Clifford Chance out from the rest. Although it does have a proportion of Oxbridge students, the majority of its trainees are the cream of the crop from universities such as Leeds, Manchester, LSE, Kings, Birmingham, Sheffield, etc, which helps the friendliness of the firm.In that context, its interesting to note that according to The Lawyers survey, nearly half (44 percent) of UK lawyers dont think law firms should reach out to less prestigious universities. At the same time, two-thirds of surveyed lawyers (67 percent) believe the best way to promote diversity within the industry is to encourage young people who normally would not have considered a legal career to become lawyers. So the idea seems to be to cast a wider net, but dont let anything unfamiliar filter through. At least, even if these newly inspired young people can t find any firms willing to hire them, they wont face the crushing debt that overwhelms many law school grads here in the States.Stay tuned for more on lawyers and diversity. posted by vera

7 Interview Questions to Uncover Corporate Culture

7 Interview Questions to Uncover Corporate Culture 7 Interview Questions to Uncover Corporate Culture You won’t succeed if you think your co-workers are annoying. (Or vice versa.) So ask these questions upfront to uncover what’s really going onYou’re not the only person being interviewed. In fact, your perception of a company is equally as important as their perception of you. Here’s the reality: You can’t work where you don’t feel comfortable. You can’t thrive where you don’t feel at home. And you can’t grow where you don’t feel welcome. Therefore, the culture of the company you’re applying for carries tremendous weight on your decision to work there.Today we’re going to explore seven questions to ask about corporate culture, along with an explanation of what makes them work. Consider asking a few of these on your next interview:1. If you could describe your corporate culture in three words, what would you say? This question accomplishes several goals. First, it’s creative. That positions you as a thinker, not just another resume. Second, it challenges the int erviewer to boil down the essence of their workplace in only a few words. Finally, your interviewer’s response isn’t as important as how she responds. Watch her body language. Check her posture. And keep an eye on her facial expressions. Look for consistency between actions and words to get the true description of the culture. Because someone’s body never lies to you.2. If you were going to give public tours of this company, what stops would the guide make? This is another creative question to challenge your interviewer. What’s more, her answers will represent the “greatest hits” of the company’s culture. This delivers invaluable insight into what they perceive as the leading attributes of their company. After all, you wouldn’t make it a stop on the tour if it didn’t symbolize a core component to the company’s culture, right?3. If the local paper were going to run a four-page article about your company’s culture, what would be impossible not to include?Creative, challenging and counterintuitive. Also positions you in a positive light, regardless of the answer. And, similar to the tour question, this allows your interviewer to put her company in the best light. The secret is, by suggesting a newspaper article it reveals the parts of the company’s culture that she would want the public to know about. Transparency is key.4. What’s the best part about working in this environment that I won’t be able to see from just a walk around the office? This question digs deep into the true value of working in a particular company environment. You learn the culture behind the culture, as some workplaces are quite different once you’ve been employed there for a few months. This might be helpful in eliciting a little candor in your interviewer about the reality you’d be working in. Sometimes culture is hard to discern from a brief walkthrough or few weeks of work.5. What are the most common complaints employees make about your company culture?Altho ugh you want to keep your interview as positive as possible, throwing a monkey wrench into the interview gears might not be a bad idea. Especially because it’s an unexpected question. The cool part is, by discovering the negative aspects about a company before working there, you know what to expect. Like visiting Portland during wet season (September through May) before deciding to move there. At least there’s no sugar coating.6. May I speak with a few of your veteran employees or new hires? Some companies will already schedule this experience into the interview process. On the other hand, some companies will not allow you to contact existing employees. Either way, asking such a question - and, if you’re lucky, getting an affirmative answer - will provide the best insight into corporate culture, as it comes from a team member himself. If you can make it happen, you’ll be glad you asked. Because behavior is the broadcaster of attitude, and attitude is the reflection of cultu re.7. What do you love best about the culture here? Finally, try getting personal. Find out what brings your interviewer back to work every day. Find out what prevents her from leaving the company and going somewhere else. This example is your best tool as a “final” question to ask toward the end of the interview. Just be sure not to ask it too early. Wait until you’ve created a connection and built rapport with the interviewer. That way you’ll be guaranteed an authentic answer.Remember: Company culture is everything. You can’t work where you don’t fit.Ask a few of these questions on your next interview, and you’ll be sure to find the organization that’s the right environment for you.Let me ask ya this … How would you describe your ideal workplace environment?

By modeling your personal brand after the brands of  influencers, you can find similar success: 1. Find Your Niche Most people come across new social media users in the course of searches related to some personal interest  like fashion, comedy, or gaming. People  then decide who of the thousands of options to engage with based on each persons mission and how they communicate it. The first step in creating your personal brand is defining your niche. Highlight a few of your top interests. What do you love to do?  What  do you do better than anyone else? What are the results of your  passion and expertise? Prove that you have something different to say â€" and say it. 2. Develop a Story To tell the best story possible, first outline it. Think in time periods: Where do you want to be a few years or months from now? You dont have to be in a transitional stage to think about your goals and position yourself accordingly. Take that personal trainer who published a recipe book. They first focused on fitness inspiration. Then, they slowly introduced posts about their meals. They saw their followers take an interest in these new posts, and they were able to extend their story accordingly. You can follow a similar path. Focus on your current expertise, but take time to demonstrate other interests as well. Look for ways these interests can intersect with and supplement your current expertise to push you toward your dream career. Use your goals as a guide to where you want to go and your mission as a reminder of how you want to get there. The story will basically write itself. 3. Engage Consistently Like they say: out of sight, out of mind. When an influencer takes a hiatus, you usually dont notice theyve left until theyve returned. Thats not to say you dont care about what they have to say; rather, theres just so much content out there to fill the void. Think of social media profiles as assets. Recruiters look at social media to learn about you beyond your resume. If your LinkedIn profiles says nothing new  about you, you are not doing yourself any favors. Choose a few channels to showcase what makes you interesting beyond your education and work experience. Engage to stay top of mind. If you have time, create a blog or YouTube channel. Use it to target your niche with valuable content. If your schedule is too tight for that,  carve out at least a few minutes a week to simply comment on others posts. Share articles that reflect how you think and offer your opinion when people ask for it. You may not produce the content yourself, but your input is still valuable. â€" Your personal brand is  relevant  beyond the internet. Bringing your online story into real-life interactions strengthens your message and helps you network more effectively. Social media influencers are perfect examples of why personal branding is the secret to modern success.
